Here at Mackenzie Smith, our dedicated team are what really sets us apart. If you’ve done business with us before, you’ll know how hard we work both as individuals, and as a team, to collectively ensure that our reputation precedes us, and to which our Trustpilot reviews are testament.
With that in mind, we thought it was high time to introduce you to the team. This week we’d like you to meet Gavin Fry, our Senior Client Manager based in our Farnborough branch.
Gavin joined the Mackenzie Smith team just over a year ago, having worked in the Farnborough area before that for an additional two years. His background lent well to a career within estate agency life.
Going back a few years, Gavin was looking for his next career, and at the time also happened to be buying a house. Looking for a new role, he wanted something that utilised the skills he had picked up along the way. Starting his working life as a trainee office manager, he developed organizational and IT skills. He then went on to a customer service role which built up sales rapport and general communicative skills on a customer level. Owing to the family run business, Gavin has also spent time in the construction industry, which has given him another string to his bow. Skills involving putting up partition walls and building specialised kitchen units built up his knowledge of houses. In another role, he held the title of purchasing co-ordinator, which developed a strong background in negotiation.
Over these years and thoroughly diverse roles, Gavin was perfectly placed for a role in an estate agency. However, it was fate that finally drew him to the industry.
During his own house buying process, Gavin came across many agents that lacked enthusiasm and the level of knowledge he felt was essential to give him the confidence to make an offer. This created a lightbulb moment; that everything he’d learnt over the years was well suited to becoming a better estate agent than those he had dealt with. With his wife needing to relocate closer to her workplace, Farnborough was the perfect fit, and he’s never looked back.
Having had his own negative experience with agents in the past, Gavin was careful in choosing the agency to join. As an independent and long standing agency, Gavin had confidence in Mackenzie Smith, but our belief that both Vendor and Buyer should be given the same exceptional service throughout the transaction, really sold a career at Mackenzie Smith.
Knowing Gavin’s background and introduction to the industry, it is no surprise that his favourite aspect of the job is the people he gets to meet. Every day brings a new face and a new impression to make. The satisfaction when he has been able to make a client’s move stress-free is the cherry on the cake.
However, as with any job, it is not always plain sailing, Gavin’s most memorable sales and moves are often the toughest, where the philosophy of Mackenzie Smith comes into play; that getting a property sold is only half the job, progressing the sale is the other half. Gavin recalls one particular sale that was memorable for just this reason; “I had valued a property in Maskell Way, unfortunately at the time they instructed another agent who had offered a higher valuation. However, when this particular agent was unsuccessful in attracting a sale at their suggested higher value, we were invited to help and went on to sell the property within a few weeks at my original valuation. The progression of the sale was challenging to say the least, with other agents suggesting an exchange was imminent, but simply by communicating with the relevant parties on a regular basis, and occasionally on matters outside of our remit, I was able to find the problems, resolve them and push for the exchange and completion. Not the easiest sale, but one worth working hard for, to get a good result for the client.”
When Gavin isn’t selling homes, along with his many skills that he’s learnt in the trade, he’s also a DJ and plays the guitar in his spare time, along with attending scooter rallies, as he particularly enjoys the Mod scene.
In addition to the Mod scene, Gavin speaks highly of the area he both works and lives in. “Farnborough is an exciting town that has pretty much everything you would need, and with the mainline access to London and M3 access, it is very well connected.”
