Will Political Change Affect Housing?

Could Reform UK’s Policy Proposals Influence Future Housing Reforms?

Following Reform UK’s strong by-election results, questions are now being raised as to whether the party’s former general election proposals could start to shape future housing policy—particularly if pressure mounts on the UK Government to engage with taxation affecting the private and leasehold sectors.

Key proposals previously outlined by Reform UK included scrapping Stamp Duty for properties valued less than £750,000 – three times the current £250,000 threshold. They also pledged to abolish Inheritance tax for all estates worth under £2 million, with the estates currently exempt up to the value of £325,000. Reform UK also asserted that the extension of 990 year leaseholds would be simplified.

Whether Reform UK’s proposals will gain any traction remains to be seen, as discussions continue around housing affordability, supply and taxation.
