Hampshire is a beautiful and diverse county steeped in history. It borders Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, and West Sussex. The county attracts many tourists to a range of attractions including numerous beauty spots and beaches along the coast, the motor museum at Beaulieu, the historical town of Winchester and the national parks; The New Forest and The South Downs.
The county is the original birthplace of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. Hampshire has a long maritime history and two of England’s largest ports, Southampton and Portsmouth, lie on its coast, having been host to many famous ships including the Mayflower and the Titanic. The town of Aldershot is known as the Home of the British Army.
There are many historic landmarks in the county including Portchester Castle, Hurst Castle, Calshot Castle, Netley Castle, Winchester Cathedral, the large statue of King Alfred the Great in Winchester and Wellington Statue in Aldershot. Hampshire has been home to famed scientists and authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Gilbert White, the natural history pioneer, and is the birthplace of engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Hampshire has a milder climate than most areas of the British Isles, being in the far south with the climate stabilising effect of the sea, but protected against the more extreme weather of the Atlantic coast. Hampshire has a higher average annual temperature than the UK average at 9.8 °C to 12 °C and higher than average sunshine at over 1541 hours per year.
