Situated on the picturesque waters of Basingstoke Canal, the popular Odiham Raft Race takes place on Sunday 1st September at Colthill Wharf, Odiham.

Sponsored by Galleon Marine, the race will raise money for The Basingstoke Canal Society who have long cared for the canal, having restored it back in the 1970’s. Last year, the raft race was a great success, enjoyed by many, with £500 raised for the charity.

This fun-filled family event includes both adults’ and children’s team races. The children’s race starts at 1pm, the adult’s, 2.30pm. Costs are minimal, at just £5 per adult and £2 per child, with entry forms available at The Frame in Odiham, on 01256 701082/email:, or The Galleon Marine Boatyard, on 01256 703691/email:

There will be a variety of stalls to keep the family entertained, including food, tea and coffee. The race will be 2.2km long, starting at Colthill to turn at Lodge Copse Bridge, finishing back at Colthill. Rafts can hold a maximum of six people, with children required to be a minimum of 7 years old for the children’s race or 11 for the adult race, with at least two competitors per raft over the age of 18. The canal itself is one of Hampshire and Surrey’s most notable attractions, with numerous spots, including the historical village of Odiham, to enjoy the serenity of canal walks, such as Ash Vale and Mytchett. At Ash Vale you have both Ash Vale Railway Bridge and Ash Vale Junction Bridge, which provide vantage points, whilst Ash Lock is the only operational lock in Hampshire, based in Blackwater near to the Surrey border.
