Based in the greenery of the rural village of Hartley Wintney, it is little known outside the local area, that the exclusive road of St Savin, home to one of our properties for sale, is not ‘just’ named after a Saint, but is actually named after Hartley Wintney’s twinned French village – also known as Saint-Savin sur Gartempe.
The twinning was originally suggested as a method of encouraging children’s interest in learning French and actually started with the original intention to improve international relations. However, over the years, the twinning has escalated to encompass an internationally inclusive social community, benefitting several countries.
The twinning has encouraged a number of social activities celebrating differences between cultures, lifestyles and languages. The students of Robert Mays in particular, have enjoyed foreign exchanges and pen pal activities with St Savin’s School since 1980, long before this became common practice amongst schools. The twinning enthusiasm did not stop there, as in 1981, Hartley Wintney gained yet another twin, the village of Malle in Belgium.
A variety of multicultural activities have still continued throughout recent years, thanks to funding support from the local community, Parish and Hartley Wintney Twinning Association; with the HWTA persistently working towards the development and growth of both of the St Savin and Malle twinnings.
The twinning is responsible for transforming the learning, development and understanding of the younger and mature members of Hartley Wintney but as it continues to evolve, creates twists on regular events. Dances in Victoria Hall featuring a Malle band playing, as well as the triathlon and the annual festival, with Belgian beer on offer, attracted the younger generations en masse; a commendable success.
This three bedroom house at St Savins presents a wonderful opportunity to enjoy and perhaps even raise a young family within such a welcoming community. The educational advantages of learning of other languages are well-known, presenting an opportunity that children would really benefit from, with modern understanding suggesting those who speak fluently in more than one language benefit from a higher intelligence. Not to mention the quite outstanding social, entertainment and even networking opportunities which clearly present themselves within this fascinating community, set within a village described as “quintessentially English”.
