Landlord news – Notice period extension

An important update for all landlords. Have you been made aware that the government has recently announced a change in the notice required to terminate a tenancy?

In order to protect tenants in private rental properties, all landlords, regardless of circumstances, are now required to serve 6 months’ notice to terminate a tenancy under a Section 21 form 6a.

This will override any clause in your tenancy agreement stating the notice period required to end a tenancy.  

With the recognised surge of interest and demand from buyers wanting to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday announced by the Government which runs until 31st March 2020, a number of our landlords have sought our advice as to when to give notice to their tenants so that they can place their properties on the market. However, for those who are yet to serve notice, it is now too late to do so, to benefit from the stamp duty holiday.
