Grant increase for heat pumps

December 07, 2023

If you’re one of many thinking about switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump for your home heating, we’ve got some great news…

The UK Government has upped the incentive for homeowners to use low-carbon heating systems. On October 23rd, the heat pump grants rose in England and Wales to £7,500, following in Scotland’s footsteps.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme originally started in 2022, then, offering £5,000 for air-source heat pumps, and £6,000 for ground-source ones. Now, it’s possible to claim the full £7,500 grant for both types of pump.

Claiming the grant could be easier than you think. Your heat pump installer needs to be qualified by the Microgeneration Certification System. Then, they can arrange the grant for you when they visit, deducting the £7,500 from your quote. What’s more, you’d have the peace of mind you’ve received a quality installation.

The Government estimates an air source heat pump will cost around £12,000 in total, so after the grant, it could cost £4,500, including the system and installation. Keep in mind that the bill will vary depending on factors such as home size, or any required energy efficiency changes, likely to be flagged on your home’s Energy Performance Certificate.
