The annual Race Night, hosted by Friends of St. Mary’s Church Winchfield was held on Saturday 24th March and was well attended by around 100 people.

The event was held to raise money for the St. Mary’s church restoration fund to carry out essential work on the church.

There were 6 races; Elvetham- Fillet Steaks, Country House Selling Stakes, Kick the Habit Cup, Donnelly’s Dilemma Maiden Steaks, Water Colour Cup and Linda’s Handicap, all named by their race sponsors.

8 horses ran per (pre recorded) race with individuals and tables able to ‘buy’ a horse for the race or place bets on several horses. A paella supper went with a few drinks to get everyone into the spirit of things and by all accounts the evening was great fun, high spirited and competitive.

Jean Haines; quoted as ‘A worldwide ambassador of watercolour” by Panorama magazine, donated one of her fabulous watercolour paintings which raised just under £1000 on its own as well as sponsoring the ‘Water colour cup’.

Mackenzie Smith sponsored Race 2, the ‘Country House Selling Stakes’ however Stephen Tetlow, Director, who is based in our Hartley Wintney office, made his own generous contribution by not winning too many bets. This also gave him a great opportunity to catch up with some previous clients and mingle with some new and familiar faces from the village.

A total of £2600 was raised for the Church restoration fund and a good time was had by all.
