Create a Halloween Welcome at Your Front Door

Your front entrance is the first impression visitors or trick-or-treaters get of your home. With just a few creative touches, you can make your door warm, welcoming and spooky for your neighbourhood visitors.

Entryway Decorating Ideas

1. Pumpkin Pairing
Place a pair (or trio) of pumpkins on either side of your door—vary sizes and colours for more visual interest. Use sturdy trays or crates beneath to lift them off damp surfaces.

2. Autumn Garlands & Foliage
Use real or faux garlands of autumn leaves, ivy, or berries to drape across your porch, arch, or door frame. Add small pumpkins or mini-gourds pinned in for accent.

3. Lanterns & Warm Lighting
Place LED candles or battery-powered lanterns on steps or window sills. Warm amber light is safer than real candles and gives a welcoming glow.

4. Wreath with a Twist
Swap your standard wreath for one in orange, rust, black or dark purple tones. Add small skeleton hands, faux spiders, or autumn leaves to bring character.

5. Welcome Mat Upgrade
Use a Halloween-themed or autumnal mat (e.g. “Trick or Treat” or “Enter if you dare”) combined with pumpkins and decorative pots.

6. Spooky Silhouettes
Add subtle silhouettes in windows (e.g. bats, black cats) using cut-out vinyl or tempered plastic. They look dramatic from both sides when backlit.

7. Hair-Raising Additions (Optional Scare)
– Hang a ghostly figure or skeleton from a porch corner, letting it sway gently.
– Add spooky sound (sensor-activated) or motion-activated lights.
– Use subtle fog (small fog machines for outdoor use) for effect on Halloween night only.

Tips for Practical & Safe Decorating

Use weatherproof materials if you can — outdoor-rated items will last through wind or rain.
Keep pathways clear — decorations should not block walk paths or pose a trip hazard.
Use LED lighting instead of open flames for safety.
Consider timers or smart plugs — have lights switch on automatically at dusk.
Use unbreakable materials (plastic, acrylic) around children and pets.

Enjoy spending time with your local community this Halloween!
