What’s a Career in Estate Agency Like?

July 25, 2024

Discover the exciting career opportunities waiting for you as an estate agent with Mackenzie Smith.

Whether you’re a seasoned property professional, have a background in customer service, or have just finished studying, you could find your true calling with us.

So, what exactly does an estate agent role with us entail?

Sales Personality
If you’re new to the property industry, you might think it’s all about the houses, but the people play a huge part. As a Sales Negotiator, you’ll interact with customers daily. So you would need to be approachable and confident, with strong interpersonal skills. Importantly, this is a sales role in a dynamic, fast-paced industry, so, if you are polite, persuasive, and driven, it could be perfect for you.

The Job
At Mackenzie Smith, we pride ourselves on our exceptional customer service, with our agents managing property listings from start to finish. We engage with the public daily, both over the phone and face-to-face, dealing with buyers and sellers.

A major perk of being a Sales Negotiator is how much the job varies. Unlike many sales roles, you are not tied to your desk, the day often includes visiting client homes for meetings and taking potential buyers on viewings.

Hours
Working Saturdays is the norm for estate agents, but our agents typically work every other Saturday, and take a day off during the week. Our office hours are 8:30 am to 6:00 pm on weekdays, with an earlier finish of 5.00 pm on Friday and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays.

Salary and Fees
At Mackenzie Smith, you’ll receive a basic salary, plus commission based on the percentage fee of properties you sell. Your income potential is directly tied to your sales performance. For instance, selling a property for £900,000 with a 1% fee means your office earns £9,000. The opportunity is limitless.

Promotion
Career advancement is a priority at Mackenzie Smith. Effort and success lead to promotions and higher commissions. Our Negotiators progress to become Senior Negotiators, then Assistant Branch Managers. With consistent high performance, you could also become a Branch Manager.

Recently promoted to Assistant Branch Manager in Yateley, Dan Franklin shared his thoughts about working at our company.

“Every day is different at Mackenzie Smith, and the sheer scope of homes I deal with keeps me on my toes. I’m privileged to see some amazing, inspiring properties and meet fantastic people, all at different chapters in their lives. I enjoy tailoring my service to meet clients’ specific needs, and when I hand over keys to new buyers on moving day, it’s so rewarding to see the excitement on their faces.”
