Haunted Histories: Local Legends and Ghost Stories

Are you intrigued by the supernatural and ghostly goings on? With Halloween creeping up on us, we visit several dark tales that linger in Aldershot, Yateley, Camberley and Hook.

The Haunted Barracks – Aldershot

Given Aldershot’s long military history, there are many whispered stories about apparitions in the old barracks, built in 1854. Many speak of disembodied footsteps and unexplained footsteps in corridors after dark. Perhaps the most chilling is the tale of The Grey Lady, said to walk the upper floor of the old Cambridge Military Hospital.

Highwayman on the London Road, Hook

Local folklore tells of a highwayman named William Boulter, who met a grim fate when he was hanged for his crimes centuries ago. On misty nights, travellers claim to glimpse his ghostly figure along stretches of the old road — a shadowy rider said to still haunt the route he once prowled.

Unexplained Tales in Yateley and Camberley

Along the Camberley and Yateley borders some of the old manors, cottages and houses have legends of poltergeist activity, rumoured about in the local pubs.

Tales tell of framed pictures falling off walls during the dark of night, accompanied by loud, unexplained rapping noises. Around the time of Halloween, a floating highway coach is also said to be seen along Reading Road, near Blackwater.

If you’re out ghost hunting this Halloween, make sure to enjoy yourself and take care!
