Trusting your estate agent

May 15, 2023

Selling or letting your home is a big decision, arguably one of the biggest you can make in life, so knowing who you can trust, and which advice to take, is paramount.

With your future at stake, it’s important to know where to look to verify any advice. It’s worth doing the research, after all, it could be the most important financial investment you make in your life.

Reviews

Take a look at agent reviews to get their previous clients’ opinions. People have taken time of our their day to write a review, so it’s definitely worth taking into consideration. If a client is pleased enough to write a few lines of praise, that in itself indicates how happy they are with the service they’ve received.

Good agents will likely have fantastic reviews, with the occasional poor one. It’s unrealistic to expect all their reviews to be perfect. What is significant is that when a genuine issue is raised, the company addresses it as a learning curve.

See for yourself how much reviewers trust us at Mackenzie Smith. Our clients often talk about our excellent customer service from start to finish, and how our agents go “above and beyond”.

Most of our reviews can be found on Trustpilot, where we proud to be rated as one of the UK’s most trustworthy agents. You can also find reviews on Google, Facebook and Instagram.

Tried and tested

Experience and knowledge lay the foundations for success. You’ll want to know that your agent has the skills and resources to deliver the service that you need.

We were founded in 1992 by our Chairman, Ed Mackenzie Smith, and Managing Director Stephen Tetlow, who both continue to be involved in the day-to-day running of the business. What’s more, all of our agents are local, offering considerable knowledge and expertise. With Mackenzie Smith, you really are in excellent hands, with many of our team offering many, many years of experience in every type of property market.

Professional Bodies

Whilst it’s not mandatory, when estate agents belong to a professional body, it helps provide assurance and security.

We are a member of the UK’s leading professional body, The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) Propertymark, and also The Property Ombudsman (TPO).

Our NAEA membership shows that we are covered by the Client Money Protection (CMP) Scheme, giving added financial security in the unlikely event that something goes wrong.

It’s important too that we uphold high professional and ethical standards, laid out in the Code of Practice for Residential Estate Agents. Our duty is to protect and promote clients’ interests, whilst acting in a fair and proper manner. Our ARLA Propertymark qualified letting agents also benefit from a greater depth of knowledge, with distinguished accreditation.

Trust your instincts

Perhaps what’s most important of all, is how you feel about an agent. Are they a person you enjoy dealing with?

Ask yourself if they are attentive to your needs, with respect for your property. How well do they communicate? Are they proactive in seeking a buyer, tenant, or chasing up progress, and would you trust them to seal you a good deal? These are all aspects we give a lot of consideration.

Recommended by a friend

One of the best ways to know you can trust an agent, is when they are recommended by friends or family.

If you know someone who has moved in your local area or has a buy-to-let, ask them about their opinion and experiences. We’re happy to say that we often have return clients, a genuine compliment in this competitive industry.
