Our spotlight articles play a big role in introducing you to our team here at Mackenzie Smith. Every other week we focus on various individuals, both public facing and back office staff that all play a crucial role in the success of our business.
Gavin joins the Yateley branch having spent the first year with Mackenzie Smith in our successful Farnborough team, who have become one of the most recognised agents in the town. With Gavin taking on his next challenge, we’ll go back to where it all started.
Going back a few years, Gavin was looking for his next career, and at the time also happened to be buying a house. Looking for a new role, he wanted something that utilised the skills he had gained in his work life so far. Starting his working life as a trainee office manager, Gavin developed organizational and IT skills, moving on to a customer service role which built up sales rapport and general communicative skills on a customer level. Owing to the family run business, Gavin has also spent time in the construction industry, which offers another string to his bow; putting up partition walls and building specialised kitchen units built up his knowledge of houses. In another role, he held the title of purchasing co-ordinator, which developed a strong background in negotiation.
Over these years and thoroughly diverse roles, Gavin was perfectly placed for a role in an estate agency. However, it was fate that finally drew him to the industry.
During his own house buying process, Gavin came across many agents that lacked enthusiasm and the level of knowledge he felt was essential to give him the confidence to make an offer. This created a lightbulb moment; that everything he’d learnt over the years was well suited to becoming a better estate agent than those he had dealt with.
Having had his own negative experience with agents in the past, Gavin was careful in choosing the agency to join. As an independent and long standing agency, he had confidence in Mackenzie Smith, but our belief that both the Vendor and Buyer should be given the same exceptional service throughout the transaction, was the real selling point.
Knowing Gavin’s background and introduction to the industry, it is no surprise that his favourite aspect of the job involves the people he meets. Every day brings a new face and a new impression to make. The satisfaction when he has been able to make a client’s move stress-free is the cherry on the cake.
However, as with any job, it is not always plain sailing, Gavin’s most memorable sales and moves are often the toughest, where the philosophy of Mackenzie Smith comes into play; that getting a property sold is only half the job, progressing the sale is the other half. Gavin recalls one particular sale that was memorable for just this reason; “I had valued a property and unfortunately at the time they instructed another agent who had offered a higher valuation. However, when this particular agent was unsuccessful in attracting a sale at their suggested higher value, we were invited to help and went on to sell the property within a few weeks at my original valuation. The progression of the sale was challenging to say the least, with other agents suggesting an exchange was imminent, but simply by communicating with the relevant parties on a regular basis, and occasionally on matters outside of our remit, I was able to find the problems, resolve them and push for the exchange and completion. Not the easiest sale, but one worth working hard for to get a good result for the client.”
Moving into uncharted territory, Yateley poses the next challenge for Gavin in his career to date. “It’s not every day you get the chance to open a new branch and I always enjoy a challenge. There’s a real variety of properties in Yateley, ranging from character to modern, along with a lot of natural beauty with the surrounding woodlands. I’m looking forward to learning more about the area and am very excited to be opening the new branch. Personally I feel Mackenzie Smith have a lot to offer the area; a personalised service, attention to detail at every stage and of course, excellent customer service.”
When Gavin isn’t selling homes, along with his many skills that he’s learnt in the trade, he’s also a DJ and plays the guitar in his spare time, along with attending scooter rallies, as he particularly enjoys the Mod scene.
