It’s clear that in recent years cycling has become a real hobby and passion for many, with more cyclists hitting the roads and tracks than ever before. There are clear benefits of the sport; from cardiovascular improvement, mental wellness and the environmental impact, but so often the case with outdoor pursuits, many stumble before they’re even on track, unsure of how to start, where to go…

If you’re new to the area, or new to the sport, you may not have found your way with cycling yet. With the Tour de France just around the corner, we’ve no doubt that we’ll see more taking up the sport, so to help, we’ve put other what is hopefully some useful information to get you on your bike!

Getting geared up

We’re lucky to have some fantastic cycle shops on our doorsteps throughout our branch network, here are just a few highlights:

There are plenty of off-road options and lots of beautiful areas to visit by road, but where to start? There are plenty of online solutions to help plan your ride:

  • Mapmyride – not only can you track your own routes, but you can also access local options online
  • Let’s Ride – here you’ll find organised bike rides along with small local routes to explore
  • Forestry Commission – unsurprisingly specialising in off-road options, the forestry commission offer over 2500km of trails to enjoy
  • Rushmoor Borough Council – looking to explore Rushmoor by bike? They’ve listed a range of routes online
  • Travel Smart Surrey – This is a great place to start if you’re local to Surrey and looking for new options, with plenty of sources linked to

Join a club

If you’re more of a social cyclist, or are looking for some advice and support, why not join your local team? There are plenty out there for all abilities:

  • Fleet Cycling – A friendly cycling club offering bike rides for various ages and abilities
  • Farnborough and Camberley Cycling Club – Catering for all cycling enthusiasts; new and experienced riders, whether for social riding, sportives, road racing, time trialling, track racing or cyclocross
  • YES Cycling – Yateley, Eversley and Sandhurst social rides, an informal group
  • Mud Club – An Aldershot off-riding club to learn off-road riding skills, open to all ages and abilities
  • Hook Velo – A social cycle group for the community which is membership-free
  • Odiham cycling club – A friendly local group for both beginners and advanced riders
