With the school holidays rolling on, it’s not always easy to keep the children entertained without breaking the bank. Luckily, we’ve got some great local events and workshops that you can take part in for free this summer! We’ve found just a few below:

Fleet’s dinosaur trail

Follow the trail, answer the questions in the trail booklet and submit your entry form to be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend with a business in Fleet. You can pick up a trail booklet from our Fleet branch, the library, the BID leaflet holder in the Hart Shopping Centre and from other participating businesses around the town. Booklets can also be downloaded here. Summer reading challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. You can sign up at your local library, then read six library books of your choice to complete the Challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way too.

Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum

The FAST museum pays homage to the important role Farnborough has played in the development of aeronautical science. Entry is free, with a collection of equipment, machinery, photos, films and more on offer, along with excellent views of the runway at Farnborough Airfield. Click here for more information.

Pets at Home workshops

Nationwide, Pets at Home are offering free workshops this summer aimed at kids aged 5-11, helping them to learn how to keep pets happy and healthy during fun and hands on experiences! Farnborough and Farnham are both presenting workshops, booking is available here.

Nature detectives

The Woodland Trust have a selection of kits available to download from their website, encouraging children to head outdoors and explore their local wildlife this summer. You can download here.

Tennis coaching at Surrey Sports Park

As part of the LTA’s Big Tennis Weekend, coaching is available at Surrey Sports Park on 1st September 10am -1pm, with a junior session at 12pm. Click here for more details.

Hobbycraft workshops

Throughout August, Hobbycraft are offering a wide selection of workshops in-store, ranging from 30mins – 1hour. Early booking is advised as spaces are filling up, but there is still some availability at Farnborough. Click here to book.

Junior Parkrun

Not just for summer, but free all year round. Parkrun is a great initiative run by volunteers to encourage adults and children of all ages to get involved with a 2k or 5k run every weekend. There are a number of events locally; Alice Holt, Rushmoor Park, Frimley Lodge, Great Hollands Recreational Ground Bracknell… the latter is the only one that offers a Sunday 2k for ages 4-14, but it’s important to note that the Saturday 5k is open to children as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Farnham Music in the Meadow

Farnham Town Council are renowned for their calendar of free public events. Every Sunday during the summer, enjoy live music from 3-5pm in Gostrey Meadow. Bring a picnic or enjoy the refreshments from the tea tent. 

Weekly tennis

Every week throughout the year, SHOTS, a tennis community in Aldershot, offer free training sessions in Manor Park, brought to you by Tennis For Free charity and Rushmoor Council. Anyone and any ability are very welcome to join, Sundays at 10am. Click here for full details.
