Now there’s just over a week to go until the Fleet Half Marathon the challenge is almost upon us. If you live in Fleet you may have noticed more runners and joggers than usual taking to the streets in preparation.
“I haven’t entered into anything like this for a while, years in fact. The last big physical challenge I can remember is climbing Mt Toubkal in Morocco back in 2009 which was a completely different experience.
“It’s been tricky to stick to a training regimen but I’m making progress. On the day the energy is going to feel very different to running on my own, with the streets lined at start and finish and with those running around me as examples to spur me on I’m determined to finish the 13.1 miles.” Commented Roxanne for whom this is a first running event.
The Mackenzie Smith team are running to raise awareness and money for Fleet Pond Society’s Clearwater campaign. The campaign is a partnership between Fleet Pond Society, Hart District Council, Natural England and the Environment Agency for a substantial restoration programme at Fleet Pond Nature Reserve to create a more valuable environment for wildlife and people.
The project involves improvements such as new seating and information boards, improved bridges and footpaths, habitat management, repairing and adding more fishing jetties and silt management. The activities work both to improve the experience of those visiting this site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and to improve the habitats and bring back the natural biodiversity and ecosystem of the Fleet Pond environment. So far a great deal of work and investment has gone into the excellent improvements via the Clearwater Campaign but it is an ongoing task which requires continuous input.
“I’m looking forward to raising money for a local charity that improves our environment” comments Tara, the second member of the team running on Sunday 22nd March 2015. The substantial work needed to keep improving Fleet Pond requires investment and as a local company, established in Fleet in 1992 it seems appropriate to dedicate our efforts at the Fleet Half Marathon to this local charity. We are also pleased to be one of the Event Partners at this years Fleet Half Marathon.
As one of the most appealing natural features in Fleet we feel it’s important to preserve and improve Fleet Pond. When people talk to us about buying or selling property in Fleet it is often mentioned as one of the highlights of the area.
