This week we’re introducing Assistant Branch Manager, Jason Bowden. Jason currently works out of our Ash Vale branch, since joining Mackenzie Smith just over 9 years ago, having lived and worked in Ash Vale for 14 years. Whilst Jason has been with us almost a decade, his experience within the industry spans almost 25 years, following a chance introduction.
“My mum had a room in a hairdressers in Hampstead, where she worked as a beautician. Over time she made friends with an agent in the neighbouring building and took the time to introduce me to him. Having taken the time to chat with me, he suggested I went down the corporate route, rather than an independent. At the time I was living in Neasden, London, so I went home, picked out the yellow pages and began to call through the listed agencies asking for an interview. After a few hours I was invited to an interview and was offered the role of a trainee at the Surbiton branch of General Accident Property Services, who have since become Your Move. Over the years I was lucky to receive training from some great agents who have gone on to open their own London agencies and become well-renowned in the business.”
Having moved out of London to Ash Vale, Jason spent some time working for a competitor over the road, “I wanted to work for Mackenzie Smith whilst just across the street. Their branding, quality of properties, professionalism and presentation were all excellent and was certainly appealing.”
With almost 25 years of experience, Jason finds it hard to find just one element of the job that he favours. “It’s all good. Most agencies have departments for the different stages of the property sale process, but here at Mackenzie Smith, we’re able to have a far greater understanding of the process as we manage every stage. From valuing, instruction, viewings, negotiations and progressing the sale through to exchange and completion, we’re able to problem solve and see the sale through from the very beginning to handing over the keys, which makes for a thoroughly rewarding role.”
Over the years, Jason has managed a variety of sales and purchases, each with their own obstacles and challenges and each memorable. “I’ve got to the point where I’m now seeing vendors return, selling homes that they bought several years back, another benefit having been with Mackenzie Smith for almost 10 years. Recently, I sold a property for a client who had previously turned to an online agent. Whilst I’m certainly aware of the benefits of using a high street agency, along with of course the reasons for going online, I was curious as to what had changed my vendor’s mind for his latest sale, in an e-mail back to my Manager he stated, “whilst that has worked well when the market was booming, this time we had literally no viewings and had to pay the fee. Jason got us appointments and we accepted an offer within the week. When our sale fell through because of chain issues, Jason found us a different buyer within a week again. My personal thought is that this is just not the time for online. Plus, whenever I call Jason he knows our buyers, everyone in the chain and all local details very well. I get a more personal service from this approach.” This kind of feedback, for me, is invaluable. We strive each and every day to offer a personal and knowledgeable service, for our clients to not only recognise this, but to reap the rewards, is hugely gratifying.”
Having lived and worked in Ash Vale for 14 years, Jason finds that it has “everything you need if you don’t want a town location. It has great access to Guildford and London, along with picturesque outdoor areas such as Basingstoke canal and Ash Ranges. The local shops and facilities are excellent, offering everything you need without having to venture into the surrounding towns. With all of this available, Ash Vale also offers good value for property prices.”
