We have some great low-cost and free ideas to get you and the children out and about this half term.

The Vyne, National Trust, is holding a Halloween Spotter Trail for ages 0-7 years, with admission at just £2, from 10am until 5pm, 26th October to 3rd November. Promising to be spooktacular fun for the little ones, there is a chocolate prize for them to collect at the end! Ages 8+ can enjoy the mysteries of a Halloween Rune Trail, where they follow a quest to decipher 16th Century Runes and reveal a hidden world! The meeting point for both events is the trail tent, accessed past the Visitor Reception.

What could be a more cultured way to entertain the children so close to Halloween, than a visit to a medieval castle? Odiham Castle is rich in history, built between 1207-14. The castle has borne witness to the signing of the Magna Carta, the imprisonment of a Scottish King, to a revolt and also a siege! Parking is nearby, at Colt Hill Car Park, with the castle accessed from the towpath. Admission is currently free. 

Frensham Pond are doing a 50 Things Trail, consisting of a one mile walk around Frensham Little Pond, with a donation requested of just £1.  The event is on everyday during half term, from Saturday 26th – 3rd November, 10am-3pm.  Meet up to begin the trail at the car parking point; postcode GU10 3BT.  Dogs are welcome, as long as they are kept on a lead.  

Farnborough Air Sciences Trust would be a great place to visit during the half term weekend. Run by a charity, admission is free although donations appreciated. An array of aircraft are on display, with aeroplanes including a Harrier and a Jaguar XW566 whilst helicopters include a Puma and Westland Lynx. Find out all about the development of RAE aviation technology, view their aircraft model display, and take a peek at their current exhibition, commemorating The Royal Aircraft Factory during World War I.

Wellington Country Park are holding a variety of activities from 26th October to 1st November. Enjoy spooky crafts, make potions, carve pumpkins, visit the Halloween Pop-Up Play Tent or the witches’ supermarket and participate in Fizzy Pumpkin’s hands on science. Loads of shows are also presented throughout each day, all undercover, including Mrs Sprocket’s Rocket Show, The Big Foot Show and a Halloween Disco. Admission is free to pass holders, with an additional cost to The Pumpkin Tent. 

Visit Active Monkeys in Fleet for some low cost indoor fun, suited to children 3-10. There is a unique four tier soft play area, with slides and a climbing frame; perfect for the children to let off some steam. A separate baby area provides more safety for the under threes, whilst parents can enjoy a nice cup of tea and hot food in the Bistro Café.

Storytime is bound to be a ghostly world of suspense for younger children so near to Halloween! A number of local libraries hold story readings throughout the year; including Ash library every Thursday at 2.15pm, Camberley Library every Thursday at 10.30am, Frimley Green at 10.15am, Guildford Fridays at 2.15pm.
