How to make a scarecrow

July 21, 2021

If you’re interested in joining in with our Fleet scarecrow competition, but don’t know where to start when it comes to building your own scarecrow, here are some handy tips!

First, collect your bits and bobs!

You will need:

An old pair of tights

Pile of straw, old leaves, or wool for stuffing

Fabric pens/paint

Three sticks, such as bamboo or old broom handles, of about 2m, 1m, and 30 cm long

String or twine

Poster glue

A hat, your Mackenzie Smith t-shirt and trousers

Buttons, sequins, glitter, and stickers to decorate as you wish

How to make the body

Place the 1m stick crossways, about an adult hand’s width from the top of the 2m stick

Tie together using the string or twine

Repeat with the small stick, halfway down the 2m one

How to make the head

Take the tights and cut a leg off.

Stuff the leg, making a rounded head shape.

Using the string, tie the end of the tight leg to seal.

Paint or draw the face on, maybe sticking on buttons for eyes!

Dress your scarecrow

Take the trousers, seal the feet ends, then stuff the legs.

Take the shirt and stuff the sleeves.

To enter our competition, you may wish to put your Mackenzie Smith shirt over another one!

Attach the trousers to the small cane, and the shirt to the medium-sized one.

Tie the head to the top of the large cane.

Take the hat and pop it on the head, inserting straw or wool for hair underneath.

Add decorations to finish in your own style!
