Our spotlight series allow us to introduce the individuals through our teams. Whilst you may have spoken to one, or some of us in the past, there are many people both in branch and behind the scenes that collaborate to make Mackenzie Smith the company we are today. This week we’re shining the spotlight on one of our Branch Managers, Farnborough’s Steve Panther.
Steve has been with us for quite a while now, but this is actually his second stint here, following approximately 6/7 years with us back in the 90’s. During his time with us then, Steve was based out of our Fleet branch as a Senior Negotiator. Since his return to us in 2013, Steve can be found in Farnborough where he has progressed to manage the team as Branch Manager.
With a career in the industry spanning over 30 years, Steve has followed the path since leaving school back in 1986. “At the time I was looking for work having left school, in the local paper there was an advert for a Trainee Negotiator. I quite fancied a desk, phone and the use of a company car (what school leaver wouldn’t?!) and the rest, as they say, is history!” Over 30 years down the line, Steve is still very much at the centre of the daily goings-on in our Farnborough branch. “I still get a buzz from getting a deal arranged and seeing it through to the end, knowing we’ve helped someone to move.”
“Going back quite a while, in the 90’s I was looking for a new company to allow for a bit more progression. I’d heard about the good personal commission incentives at Mackenzie Smith and had tired of the corporate set-up I’d been working for, a growing independent agency with a good reputation was an attractive prospect.”
One of the unique aspects of Mackenzie Smith is the integration we have between all departments; Residential Sales, Lettings, Marketing and of course, Land and New Homes. This came to play out particularly well during Steve’s most memorable transaction to-date. “I went to value a property which, on arrival, I thought may have development potential. The client hadn’t considered this prior to our meeting, so I took the initiative to introduce my colleagues from the Land and New Homes department. They were able to confirm that the plot of land was developable and consequentially sold it, allowing us to not only sell the original home, but also the new property. In our day-to-day roles we see such diverse properties and opportunities, that no two sales are ever the same. The problem solving, creativity and management involved is something I’ll never tire of.”
Local to the area, Steve sees the Farnborough benefits from both the sales perspective, but also as a resident and family man. “Without a shadow of a doubt, the ease of access into the city and surrounding areas is a huge benefit for Farnborough. The commute into London, Gatwick, but also the South Coast makes it a fantastic location to call home, along with some great schools. I was born here myself, so have seen the changes made to the town which have only enhanced the desirability of the location. With my agent’s hat on, Farnborough still offers great value for money, with all the amenities and connections you could need. From a personal perspective, as it is my hometown, with my parents still close-by, it’s been a town that supports generations, which I’m proud to both work and live in.”
When Steve isn’t selling homes or managing the team in Farnborough, his time is mostly spent with his family. As a father to three children, aged 3 – 12, he could also be classified as a part-time taxi driver, managing the hectic schedules of football training, gymnastics, tennis and birthday parties. With his wife-to-be working for British Airways, Steve’s kept busy during the overnight stops and weekend rotas. When time allows he is known to escape to a golf course on occasion.
