Land Manager Katherine Gray has successfully completed her Lands End to John O’Groats cycle with all 5 cyclists in her team reaching their destination in one piece.

“The 956 mile journey was tough, exhausting, painful but also fun.”

New to cycling in the last year, Katherine, who is no stranger to disciplined training based on her track record of  2 marathons (London 2012 and Brighton 2014) and 7 half marathons (Fleet 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), has been developing her stamina and cycling skill over many months in preparation.

KG LEJOGHaving driven to Lands End on Monday, Katherine set off with her brother, sister, father and a friend on Tuesday 19th May from Lands End. Cycling just under 100 miles a day the team cycled all the way to John O’Groats by late afternoon on Thursday 28th. That’s 10 days of solid cycling!

There was no back up support so the team of 5 needed to carry everything they might need with them, including spares in case any repairs were needed. Stopping in pleasant country B&Bs and eating cafe’s out of food along the way this was an adventure with many happy memories.

The feeling of achievement at the end of each day did well to balance the more challenging parts of the journey such as the first day in Scotland when a day long headwind hampered their progress and attempted to beat their spirits. But nothing would get in the way of four Gray’s and a Benson completing this challenge. Each cyclist had a different challenge, be it knees, legs or hands, everyone persevered through to the end.

LEJOG totalThe team enjoyed beautiful scenery and favourable weather, for the most part, avoiding main carriageways heavy with traffic in favour of country lanes, passing Loch Ness on the way and going through Dunnet Head (the most northerly point of Great Britain) before reaching John O’Groats. They had made the wise decision to fly home on the Friday!

Four Grays and a Benson have raised £1,677 for the WWF smashing their target of £1000.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support throughout, it is truly appreciated.”

Watch this space for Katherine’s next challenge – the Disney Dopey Challenge: a 5krun, 10k run, Half Marathon and Marathon on 4 consecutive days during Run Disney 2016 at Disney World in Florida…and if that wasn’t enough the Brighton marathon in 2016 too!
