Hart has reclaimed its crown as the best place to live in the UK, for the fifth time in six years.
When considering the best place to relocate or settle with the family, factors such as schools, commuter links, job prospects and the neighbourhood usually top the list. Yet, Halifax’s Quality of Life survey sets light over the bigger picture, scoring regions across the UK in areas of health, life expectancy, employment and earnings, crime rates and their social offerings. This nationwide survey, now in its 11th year, contemplates the stats to offer a consolidated overview of the UK’s top fifty places to live.
Hart has topped the chart this year, for the fifth time! This tranquil district, named after the River Hart, is made up of many prospering towns and quintessential country villages, including the likes of Fleet, Odiham, Hook and Hartley Wintney. Hart provides residents with everything from history, rural charm and, best of all, conveniences. The district’s distinct appeal is the excellent commuter links that provide residents with the aspired ‘Best of Both’ worlds. There are a plethora of woodland walks and selection of nature reserves for recreational activities, while the local schools are often well-regarded.
So, what makes Hart the ‘best place to live’?
Fit and well – 97% of residents report good or fairly good health
High life expectancy – Averaging at 86.7 years for females, which is the longest UK average
Highest employment rates – Eight in ten work and earn a weekly average of £844
Positive vibes – Adults are amongst the happiest, satisfied and content in the UK
Safe – Some of the lowest crime rates in the country
Good climate – 32.5 hours sunshine per week

How did Hart catapult back into the top spot?
The leader of Hart District Council, Councillor David Neighbour, credits this achievement to the
“…. continued investment in our residents’ well-being. Our new £23million state-of-the-art Leisure Centre and new Bramshott Country Park are testament of this.”
The district has stringent plans for future progression in a bid to hold onto the top spot, Councillor David Neighbour, details, “Through our new Corporate Plan we will continue to deliver our key activities and priorities to encourage a thriving local economy, maintain a clean, green and safe environment, keep our communities healthy, and make sure we become a more efficient and effective Council… we will remain committed to delivering services that continue to keep Hart as the best place to live.”
So, what’s in it for the kids?
Children and a growing family are often causes for moving, whether it’s more household space, better schools or simply a safer neighbourhood. In October, Halifax conducted a children’s Quality of Life Survey, which ranked Hart as one of Britain’s top five areas to bring up children. This survey related to the environment in which young ones are brought up and rated areas in terms of employment levels and house sizes – where children are more likely to have their own bedroom, with better broadband speeds, lesser traffic, population densities, with consideration given to the personal well-being of the parent.
