Estate Agents Crookham Village

Crookham Village dates back at least as far as the Domesday Book, although Crookham Village and Church Crookham did not become separate entities until the founding of the Christ Church in 1840.  Crookham Village lies across the Basingstoke Canal from its neighbour, in a more rural setting.  One of the old houses to the South West of the village was formerly King Henry VIII's holiday home, where he stayed during the hunting season to hunt deer (which gives Hart District its name).

The village centre has grown up around a scattering of ancient timber framed cottages.  Agriculture and horticulture were important in the rural origins of the village due to the rich soils in the area; specifically hop growing and drying which took place until 1974.  Crookham Village was once known for brick making and potteries, producing course red wares.

There are three focal public houses in the village. The Exchequer (formerly the George and Lobster) is built on the site of a historic wharf where timber was loaded and coal unloaded for the local area.  Now there is a picnic area and attractive walks are available along the canal towpath. The Fox and Hounds was host to the Fleet Folk club, separately managed in a spare back room, from the 1960's until 2001 when redevelopment work at the pub did away with the venue.  The club had a reputation for hosting high quality musicians in an intimate small venue, some of whom later rose to notoriety. The Black Horse is the village's third pub, a friendly local pub which serves food and hosts occasional charity events in its pleasant garden.
