Aldershot, located about 37 miles southwest of London, is known for being "The Home Of The British Army" and is steeped in military history, even getting several literary mentions: in the poetry of Rudyard Kipling and Sir John Betjeman, assuming the alias Quartershot in Thomas Hardy’s novels and as the setting in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's ‘The Adventure of the Crooked Man in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.

It was announced on 15th January 2008 that the Aldershot Military Town had been chosen as the official training camp for the British Olympic team ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and that part of the 2012 Olympics will be held in the town. Aldershot plays host to many sports facilities such as a tennis centre, bowling, swimming pools and lido, Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre, Connaught Leisure Centre and Alpine Snow Sports which is a Dry Ski Centre. The local professional football team is Aldershot Town who compete in the Football League. Before 1992 the local club was Aldershot, which folded on 25 March 1992, when members of the Football League Fourth Division. The current club was formed shortly afterwards and achieved five promotions in its first 16 seasons to return to the Football League in 2008.

The Grade II listed Aldershot observatory dates from around 1906 and is a circular red brick building with a domed roof, standing on Queens Avenue. The observatory was given as a gift to the British Army by aviation pioneer Patrick Young Alexander and has gone through various stages of use and disuse over time and was opened to the public in 2000.

The 30 foot high 26 feet long ‘Wellington Statue’ was designed and built by Matthew cotes Wayatt from recycled bronze from cannons captured at the Battle of Waterloo. Now residing on Round Hill behind the Royal Garrison Church the statue was originally erected at Hyde Park Corner in London having been handed over to Lieutenant General Anderson, the commander of the Aldershot garrison in 1885 by the Prince of Wales.
